Abbeville Trip II

Jerry Azzara

After meeting at the Reidville road Denny’s, the group, which included the Diaz's, Johnson's, McCall's, White's, Bush and I headed to our destination without incident.  A more than adequate lunch at Yoder's Dutch Kitchen just outside Abbeville was enjoyed.  Shortly afterwards we checked in to find that room 12 had a unique (although illegal) access to the outdoor veranda where we gathered for an afternoon N&N.  A few more LBC lovers from Bob and Linda White’s club shortly joined us. By general consensus dinner was to be at 101 Court, but we soon found that it was closed.  After some wandering and investigation, we came upon the Fishouse Too Buffet Restaurant where we did what we do second best.... eat.  All kinds of seafood including steamed oysters were consumed.  The group then proceeded to the slot car track for some intense competition.  Linda White was the undisputed winner not only because she had "the inside track" and coaching from a "resident expert" (driving a souped up car), but a steady hand, patience and plenty of skill.  We retired early in anticipation of a busy Saturday.

Saturday morning, after continental breakfast and in between the raindrops, we gathered on the town square for The Abbeville British Car Show.  The South Carolina Model T Ford Club who paraded through and displayed their cars across the square grossly upstaged us.  It was quite a display of great T's.  Most of us lunched at the quaint Rough House Cafe'.  No menu required.  Only fare available was hot dogs and the only options were with or without chili.  As always, beverages were available.  We then enjoyed an abbreviated tour of the Burt Stark Mansion because the Wizard of Oz play was about to begin.  We proceeded through a brief rain shower to the Opera House for the play.  Wine & cheese, dinner and desert at the Belmont Inn followed.  We assembled on the veranda, after making friends with the legitimate tenants, for what we really do best.  Drinks of various types were presented and consumed.  (Some of us stuck to the old stand-by... beer).  Believe it or not we opened the ballot box to find that the British Car show was overwhelmingly won by ... Bush ... in a Chrysler Imperial. (I guess the Queen wouldn't object since it is Imperial !!!).   Festivities continued 'til the weather blew us off the veranda (before the other guests complained).

Sunday morning after continental breakfast was a walking "guided tour" of local points of interest including several churches, the old jailhouse and Succession Hill. Before we departed a St. Patrick Day buffet including corned beef, cabbage and trimmings was enjoyed.  I'd venture to say that all had a good time !!!
